Yesterday, my Wife and I went for a day out to the beautiful island of Lundy, which is owned and managed by the National Trust and The Landmark Trust. We traveled there by Paddle Steamer – The Waverley.
The ship, is run from Scotland by staff and volunteers. They travel around our amazing island running thoughtful trips. Trips that combine multiple activities between spring and autumn.
When I worked in a strategic role within the Partnership team for the CITB we had a senior manager called Mark Noonan. He worked relentlessly towards change and bringing people together.
One statement that he would mention, and has stayed with for the past decade is:
“it takes a team to row a boat, forward and at speed.”
Yesterday my trip highlighted that statement and the sentiment in which Mark would say it.
The boat company, recognised my disability and made the arrangements to not only get me on and off the boat. They gained permissions from the Islands owners. Making sure I was treated as equal.
The 250 people on the boat, watched Teal, my Guide Dog take me around the boat and up the path to the village. Commenting on her skills, and determination to make sure I was safe.
My last point is, life is for the living and if we all work alongside each other we live a good life.
