Coaching Code of Conduct Policy

October 2025

This Code of Conduct outlines the ethical and professional standards expected of all coaches operating under this international framework.

It reflects the principles of the International Coaching Federation (ICF). It also encompasses the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC). This ensures integrity, accountability, and excellence in coaching practice.

1. Commitment to Ethical Practice

• Coaches shall honor the client’s right to self-determination, confidentiality, and informed consent.

• All coaching engagements must be based on mutual agreement, with clear contracting around goals, boundaries, and expectations.

3. Confidentiality and Data Protection

• Coaches shall maintain strict confidentiality unless legally required to disclose information.

• They must comply with applicable data protection laws (e.g., GDPR) and ensure secure handling of client records.

4. Competence and Continuous Development

• Coaches shall only practice within the scope of their competence and training.

• They must engage in ongoing professional development, supervision, and reflective practice to maintain and enhance their skills.

5. Transparency and Contracting

• Prior to engagement, coaches must clearly communicate the nature of coaching, fees, cancellation policies, and confidentiality terms.

• Any potential conflicts of interest must be disclosed and managed appropriately.

6. Inclusivity and Non-Discrimination

• Coaches shall foster an inclusive environment, free from discrimination based on race, gender, disability, age, religion, or other protected characteristics.

• They must actively promote equity and respect diverse perspectives.

7. Professional Boundaries

• Coaches shall maintain appropriate boundaries and avoid dual relationships that could impair objectivity or professionalism.

• They must not exploit the coaching relationship for personal, financial, or professional gain.

8. Accountability and Complaints

• Coaches shall take responsibility for their actions and decisions.

• They must cooperate with any formal complaints procedures initiated by clients or professional bodies, including ICF and EMCC.

9. Use of Coaching Methods

• Coaches shall use evidence-informed methods and be transparent about their approach.

• They must be prepared to explain their techniques and rationale upon client request.

10. Termination and Referral

• Coaches shall end the coaching relationship when it is no longer beneficial or appropriate.

• They must refer clients to other professionals when coaching is not the suitable intervention.

This policy serves as a living document and should be reviewed annually to reflect evolving best practices, legal standards, and ethical developments.
