Biography- Roy Imeson

Blind Man Roy

I speak from experience, not theory. Ten years plus of navigating moorland and mountain terrain as a blind man, alongside a career in inclusive recruitment for young people and people living a life with a protected characteristic. In 2025, I started developing a new Coaching Practice.

Life has taught me a lot about uncertainty, how to sit with it, work through it, and help others do the same. Whether I’m on a stage, in a podcast studio, or on a panel, I bring the same voice I use everywhere else: warm, grounded, and honest about what growth actually takes.

Inclusive Recruitment & Accessibility Leadership (RNIB)

My current full time role is with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) as an Employment Advisor specialising in inclusive recruitment. He supports employers across the UK to:

  • Improve accessibility in hiring and assessment
  • Embed inclusive recruitment practices
  • Achieve the Visibly Better Employer quality standard
  • Join and contribute to the RNIB Employer Alliance
  • Design recruitment processes that work for disabled candidates

I have lived experience of sight loss which sadly gives me a unique ability to help organisations build cultures where people can thrive.

Construction Industry Expertise (CITB)

I joined the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), to help tackle skills shortages across Devon and the South West. My work focused on:

  • Identifying regional skills gaps
  • Encouraging employers to recruit, train, and retain talented tradespeople
  • Supporting apprenticeships and early‑career entrants
  • Strengthening employer engagement with colleges and training providers
  • Contributing to major CITB programmes, including the £5m Pathways into Construction Commission across Kings across regeneration. Buikding Plymouth and Greater Exeter.

Alongside this work with the CITB, i worked as a strategic advisor and became a qualified business coach, supporting construction firms with:

  • Early‑stage business growth
  • Strategic planning and operational clarity
  • Tendering and client engagement
  • Leadership development and team culture
  • Organisational resilience and change management
  • Attracting, training and maintaining a young workforce.

This experience now shapes my skills as an Inclusive Employment Specialist and keen business mentor and my coaching style: practical, strategic, and deeply human.

Outdoor Leadership & Mountain Training

My passion outside of my career is with outdoor world of navigating around the countryside and with Mountain Training leader with extensive experience guiding individuals and groups across lowland, moorland and upland terrain. This outdoor work includes:

  • Navigation coaching
  • Chair of the British Mountaineering Council EDI – Task & Finish group.
  • Confidence‑building in real terrain
  • Group management and safety planning
  • Expedition leadership
  • Inclusive outdoor practice shaped by lived experience

My approach blends technical skill with emotional intelligence, helping people feel capable, calm, and confident outdoors.

Blind Man Roy & Moor–Mountain–Grow

Blind Man Roy was conceited in 2018, and in 2025 I revalued my work and formed a non-for profit project: Moor–Mountain–Grow to bring together my coaching expertise, outdoor leadership, and accessibility ethos.

My programmes combine:

  • NLP‑based mindset coaching
  • Outdoor confidence and navigation
  • Creative‑confidence development
  • Early‑stage business growth support
  • Story‑driven reflection
  • Inclusive practice supported by his guide dog, Teal

These programmes help individuals and teams build resilience, trust, and self‑belief through experiential learning. I have helped several business and individuals from a variety of backgrounds.

Youth Development & Community Leadership

I have spent nearly twenty five years supporting young people through:

  • Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (Bronze, Silver, Gold)
  • Scouting (Network & DofE Leader, North Devon Scouts)
  • Landmark Theatres’ Make Your Mark programme
  • School governance and community leadership

I have led expeditions across Dartmoor, Exmoor, Shropshire and the Wicklow Mountains, helping people discover independence, courage, and capability.

A Personal Note

My work is shaped by lived experience: navigating sight loss, building resilience, and discovering that confidence grows like a sapling, slowly, steadily, and with the right conditions. My amazing guide dog Teal is a constant companion on expeditions, coaching days, and the quiet moments in between.

My story is one of humour, grit, and a deep belief that people can do more than they think: especially when someone walks beside them.
